Fleetwood Mac is a British-American rock band formed in London in 1967 by guitarist Peter Green, drummer Mick Fleetwood, and bassist John McVie. In 1967, Peter Green left John Mayall & the Bluesbreakers and formed Fleetwood Mac with Mick Fleetwood and John McVie. The band’s early work focused on blues, with albums like Fleetwood Mac (1968) and Then Play On (1969) gaining attention. However, in 1970, Peter Green left the band due to mental health issues, and Fleetwood Mac’s music began to shift toward a more mainstream rock sound. In 1974, Mick Fleetwood invited American duo Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks to join the band, resulting in a dramatic change in their style. Their self-titled album Fleetwood Mac (1975) was the first to feature the new lineup and became a major success, featuring hits like “Rhiannon” and “Landslide.” The band’s next album, Rumours (1977), was recorded during a period of personal turmoil, including breakups between band members Buckingham and Nicks, as well as John and Christine McVie. Despite the tension, the album became a massive success, selling over 40 million copies worldwide and producing iconic songs like “Go Your Own Way,” “Dreams,” and “The Chain.” Fleetwood Mac continued to release successful albums throughout the late 1970s and 1980s, including Tusk (1979), which took a more experimental approach, and Mirage (1982), which returned to a more radio-friendly sound. In 1987, Buckingham left the band, though he would rejoin for reunions in the 1990s and 2000s. The band saw several lineup changes throughout the years, but their core music and influence remained strong. Christine McVie left the band in 1998 but rejoined in 2014.
